Today, there are so many more choices for women and couples interested in family planning or voluntary sterilization. Here is some basic information about the options available to you at Carteret Ob-Gyn Associates:
IUD’s are available in two basic types, hormonal IUDs and copper IUDs. IUD’s offer a very cost effective, long term, solution but are still reversible. We place Mirena, Paraguard and Skyla contraception devices. Depending on the type, they provide excellent birth control for 3-10 years. Ask one of our providers which is right for you.
This contraceptive vaginal ring provides birth control that is similar to oral contraception.
This popular alternative to hysterectomy or tubal ligation uses specialized implants with small metal springs that are placed in each fallopian tube. Over time, scar tissue grows around the implants until it permanently blocks the fallopian tubes and stops eggs from entering the fallopian tubes, where they are normally fertilized. Essure is only for those who want permanent sterilization.
Laparoscopy involves inserting a viewing instrument and surgical tools through very small incisions in the abdomen. This minimally-invasive procedure is safer than traditional tubals and allows for faster recovery. It is also permanent.
The pill is an oral contraceptive that uses hormones to prevent pregnancy. The pill must be taken at the same time every day to be effective, and pregnancy can still occur right after you stop taking the pill.
Birth control implants are devices that are inserted under the skin. Nexplanon implants are plastic rods about the size of a matchstick. The rod contains a form of the hormone progesterone which is released to prevent pregnancy. They are effective for 3 years.
Another birth control method for women, Depo-Provera, is made up of a hormone similar to progesterone and is injected into a woman’s arm or buttock. Each shot is required 4 times a year to maintain birth control.
